Detectable Diseases Through Women's Health Checkups

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Why Regular Health Checkups are Essential?

Health issues often lurk beneath the surface, making them difficult to detect until they reach an advanced stage. Many individuals who appear healthy should still undergo regular health checkups to identify potential diseases early, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.

Diseases That Can Be Detected During Women's Health Checkups

  • Anemia: Particularly prevalent in women experiencing irregular menstrual cycles or heavy bleeding, anemia can arise from significant blood loss.
  • Elevated Cholesterol and Triglycerides: High cholesterol and triglyceride levels are not exclusive to overweight women. Even slender individuals who consume high-fat diets or lack physical activity can face heart and vascular issues. Therefore, it’s crucial not to overlook these indicators.
  • Breast Tumors: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Hong Kong. Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. Unfortunately, many women remain unaware until they notice severe lumps or deformities in their breasts, which may require complicated surgical interventions. Early-stage breast tumors can often be detected through regular checkups via physical exams, ultrasound, or mammograms. Women, especially those aged 30 to 50, should cultivate the habit of regular checkups and breast screenings.
  • Cervical Cell Changes and Cervical Cancer: Routine gynecological exams typically include Pap smears to detect early changes in cervical cells. Early intervention can prevent these cells from developing into cancer.
  • Uterine Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts: Often identified through pelvic ultrasounds during regular checkups, uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow on the uterine wall, commonly seen in women who have not given birth. Ovarian cysts can disrupt menstrual cycles and, if not detected early, may necessitate surgical intervention once they grow too large.

According to a 2003 population survey by the government, Hong Kong's population is aging, with those aged 35 to 64 making up 43.8% and those aged 65 and above accounting for 11.7%. With an average female lifespan of 84.3 years, it is essential for women to undergo regular health checkups. Early detection of health issues can lead to effective management and treatment.
