Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by the presence of recurrent obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Patients often feel unable to control these thoughts and actions, leading to emotional distress and interference with daily life.

Symptoms:
  • Obsessive Thoughts: Recurrent, uncontrollable, and distressing thoughts or images. For example, worries about causing harm or impending disaster.
  • Compulsive Behaviors: Repetitive actions performed to alleviate the anxiety caused by obsessive thoughts, such as excessive hand-washing, checking items, or counting.
  • Emotional Distress: These thoughts and behaviors can lead to significant anxiety, fear, or discomfort, affecting daily activities.

Treatment Methods:
  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments, particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) techniques.
  • Medication: Antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are commonly used to treat OCD.
  • Self-Help Techniques: Learning relaxation strategies, such as deep breathing and meditation, can help reduce anxiety.
