Urogynaecology

Understanding Urogynaecology

Urogynaecology is a specialised branch of obstetrics and gynaecology, focusing on the comprehensive care of women's pelvic health, which is vital for the well-being of the bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum. Life stages such as pregnancy, postpartum recovery, menopause, and ageing can significantly impact pelvic floor function. If left untreated, these issues can severely affect quality of life. Our dedicated obstetricians and gynaecologists provide personalised care to help you regain confidence and enjoy every moment of life.

Common Urogynaecological Issues

1. Bladder Infections and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Symptoms:

  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Cloudy urine or strong odour
  • Pelvic pain or pressure

Causes:

  • UTIs are typically caused by bacteria entering the urethra.
  • Risk factors include sexual activity, certain contraceptive methods, urinary retention, and hormonal changes, particularly during menopause.

Treatment:

  • Antibiotics: The primary treatment method tailored to the specific bacteria causing the infection.
  • Increased Fluid Intake: Drinking plenty of water helps flush out bacteria from the urinary tract.
  • Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers can alleviate discomfort.
2. Urinary Incontinence

Symptoms:

  • Inability to control urination
  • Worsening during physical activity, coughing, or sneezing

Types of Incontinence:

  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Urge urinary incontinence
  • Overflow incontinence

Causes:

  • Relaxation of pelvic floor muscles, obesity, hormonal changes, and age-related factors.

Treatment:

3. Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Symptoms:

  • Sensation of the uterus descending
  • Discomfort in the pelvic area
  • Difficulty with urination

Causes:

  • Damage during childbirth, relaxation of pelvic floor muscles, and age-related factors.

Treatment:

  • Pelvic floor muscle training
  • Vaginal pessaries
  • Surgical repair if necessary
4. Vaginal Atrophy

Symptoms:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Discomfort
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Urinary incontinence

Causes:

  • Decreased oestrogen levels, commonly occurring after menopause.
