Schizophrenia

What Is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a severe mental health disorder that affects an individual's thinking, emotions, and behavior. Patients may experience hallucinations and delusions, making it difficult for them to function in daily life. This disorder typically manifests in adolescence or early adulthood and significantly impacts the patient's social functioning and quality of life.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of schizophrenia are generally divided into three categories:

  • Positive Symptoms: These include hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that are not present), delusions (holding false beliefs), and disorganized thinking.
  • Negative Symptoms: These involve emotional flatness, social withdrawal, and a lack of motivation and interest.
  • Cognitive Symptoms: These may include difficulties with concentration, memory issues, and challenges in decision-making.

Treatment Methods:
  • Medication: Antipsychotic medications are the primary treatment modality, helping to control symptoms.
  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can assist patients in understanding and coping with their symptoms.
  • Occupational Therapy: This helps patients rebuild social skills and work abilities, promoting independent living.
