What is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression is an emotional disorder that occurs in women after childbirth. It can affect a mother's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, impacting both her health and that of her baby.
 

Symptoms:
  • Emotional Low Mood: Persistent sadness, hopelessness, and mood swings.
  • Anxiety: Excessive worry about the baby's health or one's own capabilities.
  • Fatigue: Extreme exhaustion that makes daily life challenging.
  • Appetite Changes: Possible loss of appetite or overeating.
  • Loss of Interest: Disinterest in activities once enjoyed.
     
Risk Factors:
  • Family History: A history of depression or anxiety in family members.
  • Lack of Support: Insufficient support from partners, family, or friends.
  • Life Stressors: Facing financial difficulties or other life pressures.

Treatment Options:
  • Psychotherapy: Forms of therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
  • Medication: Antidepressants prescribed under the guidance of a psychiatrist.
