Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, usually caused by viral or bacterial infections. The tonsils are located at the back of the throat and play a role in fighting infections.
Symptoms:
- Sore Throat: Pain may be severe and affect swallowing.
- Enlarged Tonsils: The tonsils may appear red and swollen, with visible white or yellow pus spots.
- Fever: Usually accompanied by a high fever.
- Swollen Lymph Nodes: Neck lymph nodes may be swollen and tender.
- Bad Breath: Due to infection and pus production.
- General Discomfort: Symptoms may include fatigue, headache, or muscle aches.
Causes:
- Viral Infections: Such as cold viruses, influenza viruses, or Epstein-Barr virus.
- Bacterial Infections: Most commonly caused by streptococcal bacteria.
- Allergic Reactions: Certain allergens may trigger inflammation of the tonsils.
- Environmental Factors: Such as smoke, pollution, or dry air.
High-Risk Groups:
- Children and Adolescents: Particularly those aged 5 to 15, as their immune systems are still developing.
- Individuals with a History of Recurrent Tonsillitis: Those who have had multiple episodes in the past.
- Individuals with Weakened Immune Systems: Such as HIV patients or those receiving immunosuppressive therapy.
- People Living in Crowded Environments: Such as schools or dormitories, where infections can spread easily.
