Menopause Management

Menopause Management

Menopause is a natural biological transition that women experience typically between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age of menopause in Hong Kong around 51. It signifies the end of a woman's reproductive years as the ovaries gradually produce fewer eggs, leading to a decline in estrogen levels and a cessation of menstruation. During this period, women experience various physical and emotional changes.

Causes of Menopause

Menopause can occur due to several factors:

  • Hormonal Changes: The decline in ovarian function and estrogen production leads to menstrual irregularities and eventual cessation.
  • Surgical Procedures: Hysterectomy or oophorectomy can cause immediate menopause.
  • Chemotherapy/Radiation: These treatments may impair ovarian function, leading to earlier onset of menopause symptoms.
Symptoms of Menopause

In addition to the cessation of menstruation, decreased estrogen can lead to various physiological and psychological changes:

  • Changes in periods (irregularity)
  • Hot flashes, heart palpitations and night sweats
  • Mood swings (anxiety, low mood)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Loss of libido
