Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can pose serious health risks, especially for the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. The most common strains in Hong Kong include Influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) and Influenza B.
Why Get a Flu Vaccine?
The flu spreads easily through droplets when people cough, sneeze, or talk. While most healthy people recover within a week, the virus can lead to severe complications like bronchitis and pneumonia for at-risk groups, and can even be life-threatening. Getting vaccinated is the single most effective way to prevent the flu and its complications. Data shows that getting the flu jab significantly reduces the risk of hospitalisation and death due to influenza.
To meet different preferences, Union Hospital provides both the flu shot (Inactivated Vaccine) and a painless nasal spray vaccine (Live Attenuated Vaccine). The nasal spray is available at specific centres for eligible individuals.
