Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can pose serious health risks, especially for the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. The most common strains in Hong Kong include Influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) and Influenza B.
Why Get a Flu Vaccine?
The flu spreads easily through droplets when people cough, sneeze, or talk. While most healthy people recover within a week, the virus can lead to severe complications like bronchitis and pneumonia for at-risk groups, and can even be life-threatening. Getting vaccinated is the single most effective way to prevent the flu and its complications. Data shows that getting the flu jab significantly reduces the risk of hospitalisation and death due to influenza.
Trivalent / Quadrivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine (IIV) (Injection):
The 2025-26 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Subsidy Programme will commence on September 22. Eligible individuals can receive government-subsidised flu vaccinations. For more details, please visit the Department of Health website or speak to our healthcare staff.
Besides the Union Hospital in Tai Wai, flu vaccine are also available at the Union Healthcheck Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui and at our polyclinics across various districts. Please call the following centres for enquiries:
No. The injectable vaccine contains inactivated virus, and the nasal spray contains weakened virus; neither can cause the flu. You may experience mild, temporary side effects like soreness at the injection site, a low-grade fever, or muscle aches, which are normal signs that your body is building protection.
It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop fully. During this time, you should continue practicing good hygiene, such as washing your hands regularly and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Yes. Flu viruses change constantly, and the vaccine is updated each year to target the most prevalent strains. Furthermore, your immune protection from vaccination declines over time, so an annual shot is needed for the best protection.
The flu vaccine has a strong safety record. Common side effects are usually mild and include redness or swelling at the injection site, low-grade fever, or tiredness. Serious allergic reactions are very rare.
While the vaccine significantly reduces your risk, no vaccine is 100% effective. If you do get sick, vaccination can often make the illness much milder and prevent serious complications. If you were exposed to the flu shortly before or within the two-week window after vaccination, you could still become ill.
