Embryo Freezing

What is Embryo Freezing?

Embryo Freezing is a well-established technique that allows for the preservation of surplus embryos created during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. During your treatment cycle, any surplus embryos can be safely stored in liquid nitrogen at a chilling -196°C. This technology allows you to thaw and transfer these embryos into the uterus at a later date, eliminating the need to start an entirely new treatment cycle.

How Long Can Embryos Be Stored?
  • Embryos can be safely stored for up to 10 years.
  • To maintain your storage agreement, you will need to renew your consent and pay the storage fee every two years.
Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
  • Embryo Thawing
On the day of embryo transfer, our experienced embryologists will carefully thaw the frozen embryos and assess their viability and quality. While the freezing and thawing processes may impact the embryos, approximately 60-70% remain in good condition and are suitable for transfer. Only the highest quality embryos will be placed back into your uterus, guiding you on your path to conception.

  • Embryo Transfer
During the embryo transfer procedure, our physician will employ a slender catheter to gently navigate through the cervix into the uterine cavity, where the embryo will be positioned appropriately. This process is similar to a routine gynaecological examination and does not require anaesthesia or pain relief. Following the transfer, you may return home immediately and resume normal activities the next day.
When Are Frozen Embryos Transferred?

The timing for transferring frozen embryos can vary among individuals. There are two primary methods:

  • Medicated Cycle: This common approach involves taking estrogen and progesterone to prepare your body for transfer, making it easier to schedule.
  • Natural Cycle: This method relies on your natural menstrual cycle, requiring regular check-ups to monitor hormonal changes.
Getting Started

If you are considering fertility preservation, please schedule an appointment with one of our health professionals. They will assess your situation and determine option tailored to your individual circumstances.
