Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non‑invasive treatment for kidney stones and ureteric stones. By using focused shock waves to break stones into small fragments, stones can be passed naturally through the urinary tract, avoiding surgical incisions and the risks associated with general or regional anaesthesia.
Equipped with a high‑precision localisation system, ESWL minimises damage to surrounding soft tissues while improving safety and treatment effectiveness. The procedure is performed with ECG monitoring, significantly reducing the risk of cardiac arrhythmia, making it suitable even for patients with underlying heart conditions.
The entire procedure takes approximately 45–60 minutes, and patients can usually return to normal daily activities shortly afterwards.
A: Most patients experience only mild discomfort during treatment. General anaesthesia is not required.
A: No. ESWL is an outpatient procedure, and patients may return home to rest after treatment.
A: Your doctor will provide personalised advice. In most cases, increasing fluid intake is recommended to help pass stone fragments.
A: A small number of patients may experience mild blood in the urine or temporary flank discomfort, which usually resolves within a short period.
