Amyloid PET Scan

Amyloid PET Scan

Precision Imaging for Early Alzheimer’s Detection

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, though its early symptoms are often subtle and difficult to recognise. Union Hospital now offers Amyloid PET scan using the internationally certified VIZAMYL™ (Flutemetamol F18 injection, abbreviated as FMM). This advanced imaging technology precisely identifies beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, supporting accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and helping to assess treatment effectiveness.

Key Features:
  • Early Detection
With a small dose of FMM, the scan provides clear image of beta-amyloid plaques distribution in the brain, assisting doctors develop appropriate treatment and care plans.

  • Accurate Diagnosis
Amyloid PET scan helps differentiate Alzheimer’s disease from other forms of dementia, enabling a more personalised and effective care approach.

  • Long-Term Monitoring
Follow-up scans enable ongoing monitoring of amyloid plaque changes, supporting assessment of treatment and monitiring of disease progression.

  • Optimised Care Planning
Empower patients and caregivers to plan ahead, from everyday care to long-term treatment plans.

Scan Procedure
  1. Your doctor will first evaluates your suitability for Amyloid PET scan.
  2. A small dose of FMM is injected.
  3. The tracer circulates through the bloodstream to the brain (typically within 90 minutes, depending on individual factors).
  4. The scan is performed to capture detailed images showing distribution of beta-amyloid plaque in the brain and typically takes 20 minutes.
  5. Our specialised medical team will analyse the scan results and radiologists provides a diagnostic report.

Concerned About Dementia?

Dementia vs Alzheimer’s Disease

"Dementia" refers to a group of conditions that cause gradual decline in brain function. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type, accounting for around 60% to 70% of all cases. In Alzheimer’s disease, beta-amyloid plaques gradually build up in the brain, disrupting cell function and leading to symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, and difficulties with reasoning or communication.

Amyloid PET scan provides high-resolution images that reveal these brain changes. This helps doctors accurately diagnose Alzheimer’s disease and develop appropriate treatment and care plans.

Why Early Detection Matters?

With Hong Kong’s ageing population, the number of people affected by cognitive impairment continues to rise. Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease allows patients and their families to:

  • Plan ahead for treatment and daily care
  • Preserve quality of life for longer
  • Access timely care and support to slow disease progression
