Rabies Vaccine

What is Rabies?

Rabies is a zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus, which can lead to acute infection of the central nervous system. Transmission occurs primarily through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly via bites, scratches, or when saliva comes into contact with broken skin. The rabies vaccine, administered before and after an animal bite or scratch, prevents the virus from reaching the central nervous system and thereby averts irreversible and fatal consequences.

Who should receive the rabies (preventive) vaccine?
  • People who frequently handle or are in close contact with animals
  • Laboratory personnel working with rabies virus
  • Animal control officers and handlers
  • Travellers visiting regions where rabies is prevalent
