Fibroscan®

Fibroscan®

Liver Fibrosis refers to the formation of excess fibrous tissue in liver as a result of long term inflammation. When liver fibrosis worsens, it can progress to liver cirrhosis. As liver fibrosis is the early pathological process of liver cirrhosis, assessment of liver fibrosis has become an important clinical parameter to predict the risk of liver-related complications. Assessment of liver fibrosis and early liver cirrhosis traditionally requires liver biopsy, which is an invasive procedure carrying a small but definite risk of bleeding. Fibroscan® is a state-of-the-art machine using shear wave to measure liver stiffness, which can reflect the severity of liver fibrosis. At the same time, it can provide measurement on the severity of liver fat. Fibroscan® is a non-invasive bedside procedure with no pain, no risk of bleeding or radiation exposure. It has a very high accuracy to exclude significant liver fibrosis and confirmation of liver cirrhosis. Due to its non-invasive nature, Fibroscan® can be repeated regularly to monitor the progression or regression of liver fibrosis in different liver diseases.
