30 Years of Excellence – Explore Innovations in Healthcare

Union Hospital proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary with a landmark Medical Symposium themed “Marching into The Future” at The Henderson. This significant one-day event brought together over 200 healthcare leaders and experts, featuring 9 high-profile speakers who explored cutting-edge innovations, disease prevention and patient-centred care - aiming to foster collaboration and tackle future challenges in the healthcare sector. 

A Warm Opening and a Call for Collaboration 

Dr Anthony Lee Kai-yiu, Chief Hospital Manager and Medical Director of Union Hospital, delivered his opening remarks. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in healthcare, stating, “With an impressive line-up of renowned speakers across specialties, this symposium provides a vital platform for exchanging development trends and expertise in healthcare and building impactful partnerships.”

In her opening remarks,  Professor Rosie Young Tse-tse, GBM, GBS, CBE, JP, Emeritus Professor and Honorary Clinical Professor of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), reflected on the critical role of medical education and knowledge exchange. “Over the decades, the strength of Hong Kong’s healthcare system has always depended on our commitment to learning, teaching, and discovery. Events like this not only showcase clinical excellence but also inspire the next generation of medical professionals,” said Professor Young.

Insights from Distinguished Speakers and Valuable Chairpersons

The symposium featured a series of five keynote lectures along with dynamic panel discussions and interactive sessions led by a line-up of outstanding speakers who are pioneers in their respective fields, including:  

• Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), elivering a keynote on “Perspective of liquid biopsy for early cancer detection”

• Professor Anthony Chan Tak-cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, who spoke on translational oncology
• Professor Philip Chiu Wai-yan, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK, discussing robotic surgery
• Professor James Lau Yun-wong, Yao Ling Sun Professor of Surgery of CUHK, presenting on endoscopic surgery in GI tract
• Professor Gilberto Leung Ka-kit, Director of School of Clinical Medicine at HKU who highlighted future challenges facing the medical profession
• Professor Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, Associate Dean (Partnership & Engagement), Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at HKU, addressing pandemic preparedness
• Professor Lau Chak-sing, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) at HKU, presenting on novel therapies for autoimmune diseases 
• Professor Vincent Mok Chung-tong, Master of S.H. Ho College at CUHK, who explored the advances in dementia treatment  
• Professor Ng Siew-chien, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK, who discussed gut microbiome manipulation 

Each session was chaired by respected leaders from Hong Kong’s medical community, including Dr Leung Chi-bong, Chairman of The Hong Kong Private Hospitals Association; the Honourable Dr Lam Tzit-yuen, Legislative Council Member (Medical and Health Services); Professor Philip Li Kam-tao, President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine; and Dr Ching Wai-kuen, Director (Strategy and Planning) of the Hospital Authority; and the representatives of Union Hospital. Their insightful contributions enriched the discussions and highlighted opportunities for advancing the local healthcare landscape.
