Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI is a medical imaging technique involving magnetic field and radio frequencies to generate thin-section images of body parts without using ionizing radiation. It is a non-invasive procedure, and there are no known significant harmful effects to the human body. It provides excellent soft tissue contrast, and is particularly useful for diagnostic imaging of the brain, neck, spine, muscles, joints, breasts, prostate, heart and vessels.

Union Imaging and Healthcheck Centre has installed a state-of-the-art SIGNA™ Artist 1.5T MRI scanner, the most advanced 1.5T system produced by GE Healthcare. It has a 70cm wide bore magnet, AIR TechnologyTM coil, proprietary acquisition technology and total digital imaging, which improve image quality and clients’ comfort during the examination.

Union Imaging and Healthcheck Centre provides a comprehensive range of MRI examinations, including cardiac angiography, breast, multiparametric prostate examinations, enterography, spectroscopy, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and whole body MRI scan.

Whole body MRI

  • No ionizing radiation
  • Whole body structural imaging from head to toe
  • Detection of cancers, inflammation, obstructive and other processes in the body
  • It may be a stand-alone examination or a useful complementary tool to other modalities if any abnormality is detected.

Whole body MRI is suitable for people who are asymptomatic but want an overview of their health condition.

Features of SIGNA™ Artist

  • Total Digital Imaging

Total Digital Imaging eliminates unnecessary noise and improves signal-to-noise ratio.

  • Clients' Comfort

70cm wide optimized bore magnet with SilentScan and AIR TechnologyTM coil significantly reduces client’s anxiety and increases comfort by reducing scanning time and noise generated during the examination.

  • New MR Technology
    • HyperBand, Hypersense and HyperCube reduce scan time and ensure better image quality.
    • MagicScan allows multiple sequences to be acquired in one scan (in approximately 5 minutes).
    • Define enhances the image appearance with integrated inline optimizable settings.
    • SilentWorks significantly reduces scanning noise.
    • ViosWorks provides 3D cardiac anatomy, function, and flow.

  • Environment

With soft ambient lighting, soothing in-magnet fans and relaxing music, we offer a comfortable scanning environment for our clients.

AIR Technology™ coil

AIR Technology™ coil is a brand-new design of anterior array coil produced by GE Healthcare. Unlike traditional coil, AIR Technology™ coil are light and flexible. It's as light as a blanket making clients feel more comfortable during the examination. The adaptive AIR Technology™ coil allows flexibility in any direction to conform to the client's anatomy. It can adapt to various clients’ shapes and sizes for better comfort.

Advantages of MRI

  1. MRI can demonstrate very good soft tissue contrast.
  2. MRI allows early diagnosis and evaluation of tumors.
  3. MRI can provide a fast, non-invasive way to rule out vascular abnormalities.
  4. MRI does not use ionizing radiation.
  5. MRI contrast has lower allergic risk compared with that used in x-ray and CT.
Preparations
  • For MRI safety, clients need to confirm that no ferromagnetic implants inside their body.
  • If clients have metallic implant e.g. pacemaker or aneurysm clips in the brain, they should consult their doctor for the MRI compatibility of these devices. If possible, it is preferred to provide the modal number of the device.
  • No fasting is needed for general MRI exam including plain and contrast studies, except 4 hours fasting for the MR cholangiopancreatography.
  • If clients are going to have MR cardiac scan, they should not intake caffeine 12 hour prior to the MRI exam.
  • Please bring old films along to us if available.
Procedures
  1. Clients will be positioned on an exam table and slowly moved into an open magnet.
  2. During the examination, MRI scanner will make loud noise. We will provide headphone for clients. The only thing they need to do is to stay still and relax throughout the examination. If clients feel unwell, there is a bell in the scan room for them to call us.
  3. For most of the MRI exam, no breathing control is needed. However, clients are required to hold breath for some exams, such as abdomen and cardiac scan.
  4. In some situations, the doctor may request intravenous contrast injection. It does not mean that the case is bad. It is only to increase the accuracy of the diagnosis.
  5. The exam takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
Reminders
  • If clients have metallic implant e.g. pacemaker, please let us know.
  • If clients have suffered from claustrophobia, please let us know.
  • Pregnant clients need to consult the doctor for the balance between benefit and risk.
