The Dental Centre of Union Hospital’s provides an integrated dental service and non-office hour emergency dental treatment for both in-patient and out-patient clients, covering a range of general and sub-specialties services including Endodontics, Periodontics, Paedodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Prosthodontics.
Our centre provides professional tooth cleansing (scaling) service by registered dental surgeons. Scaling involves the removal of dental plaque, calculus and stains from the tooth surfaces. Regular scaling can maintain good oral health and removes surface stains. It also prevents the occurrence of tooth cavities, bad breath, gum disease, etc. It is recommended that regular visits be paid to dentist for dental checkup and scaling in every 6-9 months to maintain good oral health.
Minor and moderate tooth cavities can be restored by simple fillings. Early intervention can preserve the tooth and prevent complications. Treating early decays and defects could prevent further tooth destruction, pain and avoid tooth loss.
In certain conditions, it is necessary to remove a tooth from its socket. There are a number of reasons why extractions may be needed. The most common reason involves a tooth that has become unrestorable through tooth decay or periodontitis (gum disease). Apart from that, dental surgeons may recommend removing tooth which is malaligned or essentially useless (e.g. wisdom tooth removal) for further treatment consideration.
A crown is an artificial restoration by placing a tooth-shaped "cap" over a tooth. A crown could restore our tooth shape and size as well as improving its appearance. It is especially suitable for cracked tooth and after root canal treatment.
Dental implants are used to replace tooth roots for missing teeth. When a decayed tooth is extracted, both the crown and the root are lost. An implant, usually made of titanium, is placed in the jaw bone that serves as a substitute for the tooth root. It provides a strong foundation to support the replacement tooth. Implants restore the functions of natural tooth, help to stop jaw bone loss and maintain the facial features. Regular dental check-up is recommended.
Dental implantation may not be suitable for clients with special health conditions. Our dental surgeons will provide comprehensive evaluation for each individual.
Root Canal Treatment (also known as Endodontics Treatment) is a treatment for infected tooth pulp to eliminate pain and infection. During the Root Canal Treatment, the infected or inflamed pulp is removed and the root canal is cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown. After restoration, the tooth remains the same function and esthetic.

Orthodontic Treatment is a series of processes that treat the improper positioning of tooth and improve the appearance by orthodontic appliances. Our centre provides fixed orthodontic appliances (traditional braces) and removable orthodontic appliances including "Invisible" braces for clients. An "Invisible" brace is an option other than traditional braces for adult clients as they are virtually unnoticeable. The length of treatment may take 1-2 years depending on how severe the problem is. Adults could be treated in longer duration in order to achieve optimal results.
Periodontal Treatment includes Root Planing and Periodontal Surgery. To remove accumulated calculus, dental plaque and inflamed gingival margin, root planing will be involved to treat the infected root surface with appropriate dental instruments. Periodontal surgery is required when the tissue continues to be inflamed or further destructed. A gingival flap is lifted to expose the root of a tooth to eliminate periodontal pocket. Good oral hygiene and regular maintenance by periodontist are crucial to control periodontal disease.

Oral Maxillofacial Surgeries treat a wide range of conditions and symptoms, including placement of dental implants/ to replace missing teeth, removal of impacted tooth and wisdom tooth (for location nears nerves or complicated cases), treating abnormal oral and facial structure, oral cancers and orthogenetic surgeries, etc.
Our centres provide kids and teenagers with oral care and dental disease prevention treatments. Our experienced Paediatric dental specialist carries out a variety of oral health examinations and treatments. Dental treatments under sedation or general anaesthesia can be arranged for patients with special needs.
Exposure to coffee, tea, dark-coloured drinks, tobacco causes stained and yellow teeth. Tooth whitening makes use of chemicals to lighten the surface stain and pigmentation of enamel and dentin. With our in-office whitening treatment or take home tooth whitening kits, your teeth can be effectively bleached and restore to the natural tooth color. The whitening effect usually lasts from 12 to 18 months. To make the improvement more long-lasting, it is advised to avoid or reduce consumption of tooth-darkening food and beverages and stop smoking. Visiting dental surgeons regularly for professional cleaning also helps to prevent further discoloration.
Dental Veneers (Porcelain Veneers) are thin and custom-made shells of materials designed to cover the front surface of tooth. It could improve appearance by altering the shape, position and color of a simple tooth or multiple teeth. A tiny amount of enamel surface of the tooth may be trimmed, then the composite veneer is permanently cemented to the tooth. It is advised to reduce consumption of tooth-darkening food and beverages and stop smoking to keep your teeth whiter for a longer time.
Tooth brushing is a key part of good oral health. It is the easiest way to protect our teeth, and it helps to prevent cavities and gum disease and eliminate bad breath. The tooth can be divided into 3 parts, inner lateral, outer lateral and chewing surface. Best Technique for Brushing:
- Brush the outer lateral part first. Place your brush at a 45-degree angle towards your gums and gently brush in a circular motion with a few strokes on each tooth.
- Use the same technique for inner lateral, and then brush the chewing surface of the tooth.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day (2 minutes each)
- Use the right tools – soft bristle tooth brush and fluoride toothpaste
- Make use of dental floss or interdental brushes to remove dental plaque between teeth
Dental plaque is the leading cause of tooth decay and periodontal disease. Tooth decay is the result of an infection with certain types of bacteria that use sugars in food to produce acids. The repeated acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. Cavities are permanent damage that a dental surgeon has to repair with a filling. It helps maintain oral health and prevent dental cavities from worsening.

Gingivitis refers to the redness, inflammation and bleeding of gingival margin. When the dental plaque is attached to tooth surface and left untreated, the gum may be irritated and becomes the early stage of periodontitis.
The persistent accumulation of dental plaque may calcify to form calculus which can cause damage to the periodontal tissue. The teeth will lose support and progress into periodontitis

Emergency dental service during non-office hour can be available at our Dental Centre in Union Hospital. Please note that our dental surgeons are not on duty at night nor during holidays. Please come to Union Hospital Emergency Medicine Centre if needed and our staff will contact our dental surgeon to come back for emergency consultation or treatment. The waiting time and arrangement of each case are varied. The consultation fee during non-office hour is from $7,000 up (excluding medication, dental imaging or actual treatment fees, and price will be quoted before treatment).
