Does sweating help children fully recover from high fever?

Dr Wu Wing Yee, Clara
There are many factors contributing to child fever, including viral infection or bacterial infection, gastrointestinal infection, urethritis, rashes or pneumonia. In general, fever caused by upper respiratory tract viral infection would go away in a few days. About 3% of children between 6-month-old to 5-year-old would have fever cramp parents should be extra cautious.

Does put on more clothes help?

Dr Wu Wing Yee, Clara
Bundled up the child could overheat the child and drive his/her temperature up. The correct way is to soak the child or sponge him/her in warm water (around 37C), this helps blood vessels to expand to dissipate heat. Excessive sweating during fever will deplete body fluids. Remember to drink an adequate amount of water to maintain proper hydration.

My child has frequent fevers, but would recover quickly with medicine and rest. Is it necessary to bring my child to see the doctors?

Dr Wu Wing Yee, Clara
Infants (particularly under age 1) have weak immune system, so they are more vulnerable to bacterial or viral infection and fever. It is important for parents to pay close attention to their child when cramps occur, it may possibly be due to infections of the central nervous system. Parents should seek for medical help immediately. On the other hand, child fever can be caused by many different medical conditions, if your child gets fever frequently, you should inform your doctor and request a thorough body check for your child.
