The School of Nursing, Union Hospital transforms lives by promoting health and the quality of health care.  The central purpose of the School of Nursing is to enrich the mind by stimulating and sustaining the spirit of free inquiry directed to understanding the nature of the universe and human existence.  The philosophy of the School of Nursing is consistent with that of the Union Hospital’s beliefs “Caring, Reliable and Empathetic” as it prepares the highest level of quality of medical and nursing care for patients/clients.  The School aims to create innovative models of education and practice; foster well-being and collegial spirit in a healthy work environment.

The School believes that education is based on humanistic approaches that foster critical thinking and promote awareness of social and cultural diversity among individuals.  The School views each student as a unique person with special talents, abilities, needs, and goals.  Cultural diversity, varying life experiences, and changing socioeconomic factors affect each student differently.

To this end, the School endeavor to provide an environment that assists students to realise their full potential.  The acquisition of professional knowledge and the development of clinical competence occur through active involvement of students in the learning process. Students assume primary responsibility for learning, while the School provides educational opportunities for knowledge acquisition and professional role development.  We believe that an atmosphere of shared growth and inquiry offers the maximum potential for development.

Objectives of the School

  • To provide nursing education of the highest quality by integrating theoretical fundamentals and clinical excellence that prepares graduates to develop and apply professional knowledge, skills and values in the delivery of holistic nursing care.
  • To produce competent qualified nurse practitioners with high-caliber attributes to demonstrate accountability and commitment to standards of professional practice in assuming multiple roles across diverse healthcare settings.

The Structure of the School

The School has a School Principal, Nurse Educators and Nurse Tutors to provide comprehensive classroom teaching, teaching in nursing laboratories and clinical supervision/ coaching.  Additionally, teaching staff and Clinical Mentors from clinical departments will offer daily clinical supervision for students at various clinical settings, including both at the Union Hospital, external hospitals and nursing care organisations.

  • Nursing Laboratories
    There are 3 well-equipped nursing laboratories for clinical skills demonstration, practice and assessment of nursing skills.  The design is mimicking of hospital ward settings which provides a venue for students to attain fundamental clinical skills and apply theories based interventions to nursing practice in a stimulated setting.
