The Hearing Mechanism

Soundwaves travel through the following ear structures, namely outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.


Problems occur in any of these ear structures may result in hearing loss.

Outer Ear

1. Pinna
2. Auditory canal

Middle Ear

3. Eardrum
4. Malleus
5. Incus
6. Stapes
7. Eustachian tube

Inner Ear

8. Cochlea
9. Auditory nerve

 

Types of Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss:

  • Problem occurs in Outer Ear and/or Middle Ear
  • Examples are Otitis Externa, Otitis Media, Ossicular Chain Discontinuity, Otosclerosis

Sensorineural Hearing Loss:

  • Problem occurs in Inner Ear or brain
  • Examples are Presbycusis, Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Sudden Hearing Loss, Acoustic Neuroma

Mixed Hearing Loss:

  • A combination of problems in both outer/middle ear and inner ear
  • Examples are Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
